We had class all day today.
  • ·      Rose: All of the city in Dushanbe, there are these ice cream stands that sell one-somoni ice cream (for what it’s worth 9.4 somoni is about 1USD). These ice creams (yakh mos transliterated) are one of the few cool things around. Most bottled water isn’t even refrigerated. The ice cream is just really good. It’s like soft serve in those stryfoam-y kinds of cones. Sometimes they put chocolate sauce or powder on it as well. Anyway, today I had two.
  • ·      Thorn: I have a cold (in the hottest place ever as my host family liked to tease) and there was this moment where I was lying in my room, struggling almost to breathe in the stuffy air, feeling sweat coating every part of me, and at that moment I wished I could be anywhere else but Tajikistan. Otherwise, things have actually been going well. I also really messed up reading a passage aloud in class. It was very embarrassing. I can barely read aloud in English, so it’s unsurprising I guess that I would struggle in Tajik.
  • ·      Bud: Weekend! No classes for a bit, also we’re going to the internet cafe Monday, so I will hopefully be able to upload these then.
  • ·      Bee/Pollen: Someone who helped you and how they helped you
  • ·      Roots: identity you hold or past experience or action that influenced something today and how
  • ·      Soil: I might stop doing this one, because the heat always has an impact on my mood, energy, and even ability to complete simple tasks like running.
  • ·      Flower: something that happened today that you are proud of

Hi all, Over the summer I will be studying abroad at Tajikistan on a state department scholarship program called NSLI-Y. I hope to keep this blog updated when I can, but since my internet connection will be sporadic, I make no guarantees. That said, I plan on writing down what I am doing as well as my thought and reflections, so hopefully, I will be able to publish those entries once I return to internet connection. Now to answer a couple of questions: Where is Tajikistan? Tajikistan is a former Soviet state located in Central Asia. It is just north of Afganistan and west of China. I will be staying in the capital Dushanbe. What will you be doing there? My time in Tajikistan will focus primarily on learning the language. In Tajikistan, they speak Tajik, which is a version of Persian. It is very similar to Farsi which is spoken in Iran and Dari which is spoken in Afganistan. The next test is fasting approaching and I am pretty worried about it. It has seven sections: 1.      A short poem by Rudaki (this I already have memorized) 2.      A much longer poem also by Rudaki (which I have about half memorize) 3.      1 short story that is about 2/3 of a page long (which I still have to memorize word for word) 4.      2-4 proverbs (I have one memorized so far) 5.      A speaking section where we have to stay 15 sentences about Dushanbe (we are allowed notes for this) 6.      A second speaking section where we have to have a conversation with a peer about a trip to a bazaar or exchanging money (relates to this week’s vocabulary)        7.      A written test covering the grammar and vocabulary lessons of this week The sheer amount of memorization just gets to be a lot. Reverse Culture Shock

They talked about in our "re-entry meeting," but I didn't think it would be super noticeable but it is. A few things that have really stood out to me once I've been back. I was hiking, and we reached the summit I went off to take photos. When I looked back I saw my trip leader down in child's pose, doing yoga, except I thought he was praying. In Tajikistan, I awkwardly walked in on people praying so frequently that I just assumed. The first reasons my brain thought he wasn't praying was because I noticed he wasn't facing east (the sun was setting so it was easy to see the cardinal directions), even though in Tajikistan they pray facing west. It was only after that thought went through my head that I remembered I was in the U.S. that ever few hipster yogi white men are actually Muslim, and he was actually doing yoga. I kept putting my toilet paper in the wastebasket in my bathroom instead of in the toilet since I had grown so used to doing that in Tajik
